First Time Motherhood - What its All About
By: Maddie Morgan
It doesn't matter how many books you've read or how prepared you think you are, there is nothing that can prepare you for the initial shock that comes with te enormous life changes a baby brings.
That isn't to say that you shouldn't read parenting and baby books. Of course you should. It's just no amount of reading or good advice, can really prepare you emotionally, mentally or physically for what baby brings.
Sleepless nights, lack of adult communication, baby blues, sore nipples, feeling at times like you have no clue what to do, are things that you have to experience first hand to really understand.
I believe the single most important thing any woman can do to help prepare her for motherhood, is to rally together all the help you can get. Whether it is your mom, mother-in-law, best friend, ladies from the church, next door neighbor, it doesn't matter, just ask and take all the help you can get.
There is a very dangerous myth floating around that new moms need time alone. I think it is better stated that new moms need time to sleep (so ask for someone to watch baby for a couple hours while you get some rest), they need help with meals and housework, they need sympathy not fixing when the water works flow, and they need a friendly ear that doesn't get bored with how perfect this new creature is, and all the wonderful and interesting sounds it makes.
So ladies, new moms, ask for help, and take it where you can find it. This is also a call to everyone else as well. A lot of new moms are afraid to ask for help, so don't be shy about offering it.
