By Paul AJ Evans

What are the must-have signs?

There are really two categories of signs about whether your baby is ready to be potty trained or not. One group is must-haves and the other group is nice-haves!

Your baby must have the ability to communicate either verbally or with the use of his / her hands and be able to follow simple instructions. He / she must also have the ability to walk around and the physical strength to squat down onto a potty. Finally the baby must have regular soft formed bowel movements.

What are the nice-haves?

These are signs that will give you an idea of how resistant your child will be to the potty training process. If he / she is showing signs that she dislikes a dirty nappy, imitates one of her parents in certain things or even shows signs of wanting to be more independent then these are all positive signals.

In Summary

In general babies are ready for potty training at the age of 18 months and it is generally accepted that there is no point in delaying the potty training process beyond this point if the baby is ready. In the 1960's most children were potty trained by the age of 18 months, however over the last few decades the average has been pushed back to 2 1/2 to 3 years. In some cases children are still in nappies at the age of 4. The advice from child psychology professionals is to get the potty training milestone out of the way as soon as you're confident the child is ready for it.
