My daughter was a bit of a drama queen when we were potty training her. She expressed all the basic signs of interest in the idea, even following me as I went about my bathroom routine. But when it actually came to the task, she was inconsistent. Sometimes she would do her thing in the potty; sometimes she would make a mess.
Right before she turned three, though, we had a break through. How did we succeed in potty training her? Here are some tips on potty training girls:
- The Gender Myth There is no difference in potty training girls and boys. Some say girls learn faster, but I think it really depends on your child's disposition.
- Power struggle This was what confused me: my kid was perfectly potty trained in daycare but refused to be the same at home. I soon realized that it was a sort of power struggle. Parents, learn to assert yourselves when your child pulls this on you. Lovingly insist that they use the potty. If they make a mess, let them clean it. Be strong despite the whines and tears.
- Pretty in Potty Another thing I found helpful was buying a pink potty for my daughter. This may sound silly, but a lot of kids are actually afraid of the potty, often thinking that they could fall into it. Buying a pretty one might help ease the fright.
- Patience Finally, whether you're potty training girls or boys, be patient. When you feel like you're about to lose your temper, step out and ask your spouse to take over.
