Baby Name Suggestions - It's Not a Fad
By Tom Tessin

There's a lot of ego in parents to be, it's natural. The focus of the soon to be new life is on them, the attention is on this next stage of building their lives together under most circumstances, and quite naturally, they're pretty sure that they are going to be the world's best parents ever. It's all perfectly normal and older folks are pretty familiar with the behavior of new parents to be and are able to keep their criticisms to themselves.

But when it comes to baby names, we all need to speak up a little. How many grown individuals change their names, abbreviate their first name to an initial and use their middle names or simply retain a favorite nickname rather than go by their given names? The first piece of sound advice for parents planning to name their children therefore, is to get your ego out of the way.

After all, your precious bundle will have to go to school, look for a job and have friends eventually, so that cute little play on words needs to stay an imaginary assertion of your territorial claim to your child and you need to give him/her a name that won't have people saying, "what?" Having overcome the ego, we move on to fad names.

Fads come and go: The world has finally stopped producing Heathers and Brittanys. The world has at last decided that there are enough Tylers and Taylors. The new names in the fad mill? Who knows, there seem to be an awful lot of Emmas gracing my path these days. Fad names are difficult because your child will forever be known as Emma G. or Tyler H. because some means of distinguishing children with common names is necessary. The best approach here is admire the fad names but try to choose a name that's not on the most popular list when it comes to naming your child.

Identity Theft Might Be an Issue: Finally, as you choose the name for your baby, pay attention to your last name. If you have a common last name you may want to choose a less common name or a variant spelling of a familiar name simply to avoid the risk of identity theft.
