Tip 1 - New Versus Used
Because prices have climbed dramatically over the last several years, the temptation to buy or accept a used model is a potent one. However, there are a couple of reasons you should avoid doing so. First, depending upon when an older crib was manufactured, it may not meet current safety standards. Second, dangers can often be hidden from view. For example, if the structure is unsafe, you may be unable to tell from observing it. Buy new. It's safer.
Tip 2 - Necessary Features Versus Options
A lot of models offer ornate designs and come with everything a parent might need (and plenty more). Basic units are typically safer. For example, a finial might look appealing, but your baby's clothing can easily become ensnared. Some units offer drop sides. However, a number of manufacturers have issued recalls on them. The simpler the product, the less likelihood of a dangerous mishap.
Tip 3 - From Economy To High-End
Cribs cost anywhere from $75 to thousands of dollars. Those that are economical are usually manufactured with lower-quality (but still safe) materials and are more utilitarian than aesthetically pleasing. Better materials command higher prices. Models in the middle price range often come with sturdy wheels, drop sides, and a stabilizer bar. At the high end, you'll find customized units and name brands that offer both safety and style. It's worth noting that the high-end types don't offer more safety than many lower priced items.
Tip 4 - Buy The Entire Package
Some models will come with an accompanying mattress, but others won't. The problem is that if a mattress is not included, you might buy one that leaves too much room between it and the inside of the crib's frame. Too much room is unsafe for your baby because he can become trapped in the space. If possible, buy the entire package at the same time. That way, you'll be able to choose a mattress that is well-suited for the frame.
Buying a crib for your baby can be a daunting experience if you're uncertain with regard to what you're looking for. Buy new, buy basic, plan your budget, and purchase both the model you want and the mattress on the same visit.
